How To Install Shell Cup Pull Handles

There are two main types of cup pulls: those that are secured with screws from the back (inside the drawer) and those that are attached with screws from the front.
Necessary Tools:
1. Drill and Drill Bits
You'll likely need a standard drill bit to create the initial hole. Additionally, you'll want a drill bit that matches the type of screws you'll be using, which will most likely require a Phillips head (also known as a cross head) tip.
2. Template or level
This convenient template will simplify the installation of your cup pulls! Additionally, it works for other hardware like pulls, knobs, and handles. It eliminates the need for extensive measuring and calculations, which is a huge plus for someone like me who struggles with math. Plus, it even includes a standard drill bit.
If you really need to, you can use a level instead or forgo the template if you're trying to save a few bucks. However, I can assure you that it's worth the investment! You can also create a homemade template with just a piece of paper, a pencil, and a ruler.
3. Hardware
Of course, you'll need the shell cup pull handles and screws. Often, the necessary screws come included with the cup pulls. However, depending on the thickness of your drawers or cabinet doors, you may require longer or shorter screws than those provided. If that’s the case, simply measure the thickness of your drawer and head to your local hardware store with your shell cup pull handles and the accompanying screws. Let an employee know that you need screws with the same diameter but a longer or shorter length based on your drawer's thickness and the depth of the screw hole in your pulls. (Also, check out step 1 below for an additional tip to avoid measuring.)
4. Pencil
After you align the template (or level) with the drawer, make a small mark to indicate where to drill once you move the template. Having a pencil on hand is always useful during any DIY project.
5. Screwdriver
You’ll need a screwdriver to remove the hardware you’re replacing. You'll also use it to tighten your new hardware after installation.
Steps:
Using a screwdriver, take off the current hardware from your drawer. Tip: Save the screws you remove, as they are likely close to the length you’ll need for your shell cup pull handles. While they may not match the required diameter, you can use them as a reference for the correct length.
Measure the distance between the two screw holes on your shell cup pull handles. Alternatively, to skip measuring, place the zinc alloy cabinet handle on the template to identify which two columns of holes you'll be using. Note: This template is designed for pulls with screw hole distances of 128 mm, 96 mm, or 3 inches.
For Drawers: Align the template on the drawer, positioning the top of the template with the top edge of the drawer. Then, center the template's hole with the existing hole left by your knob. This will ensure the template is horizontally centered, eliminating the need for additional measuring (can you tell I prefer avoiding numbers?). If your drawer hasn't had hardware installed yet, measure to find the center and mark it with a pencil. Note: For long drawers (over 2 feet), consider installing two cup pulls. In this case, find the center and place each pull halfway between the center and the edge of the drawer.
For Cabinet Doors: You won’t be centering the shell cup pull handles. Instead, install them on the side of the door opposite the hinges. Refer to the chart below for further details.
With the template centered horizontally, position it vertically. To avoid filling any holes, use the shell cup pull handle to cover the hole left by the knob. Most screw holes are located at the bottom of the cup pulls, so the holes will be slightly lower than the old knob hole.
Once the template is correctly positioned, use the pencil to mark where you’ll drill the two new holes.
Using the standard drill bit, drill the holes at your marked spots.
Install the zinc alloy shell cup pull handles! If the screws are inserted from the back (inside the drawer), you’ll need your drill inside the drawer. If they screw in from the front, you’ll have a bit more space to work. This part is straightforward—just remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey!
